If Lenovo’s spendy ThinkPad X1 Carbon is the laptop every corporate drone craves, Lenovo’s thrifty ThinkPad X240 is the laptop their employer is more apt to spring for (assuming, of course, that the company’s IT department has standardized on Lenovo and not Dell, HP, Toshiba, or some other commercial laptop builder). You might think the ThinkPad X240 dell la45nm131 is too thick and too heavy to qualify for Ultrabook designation, but it’s only 0.79 inches thick and it weighs just 3 pounds. And there’s a very good reason why the X240 doesn’t taper to a knife edge like the X1 Carbon does: The X240 is outfitted with two batteries and a battery bridge that enables you to swap a depleted battery for one that’s fully charged without turning the machine off. That’s slick.
Design
The Lenovo ThinkPad X240 has the same simple-yet-elegant, black aesthetic as prior generations of ThinkPads. However, ThinkPad aficionados will notice some significant differences between this laptop and the X230, its 2012-era predecessor. The palm rest, which was uncomfortably shallow on all X200 dell m4800 charger series laptops dating back to 2008, has been lengthened, allowing more room for resting your hands while typing. On the other hand, Lenovo has replaced the attractive soft-touch lid on the X230 with one that has a plain, matte-black texture.
Longtime fans of the ThinkPad will be happy to know that the X240 doesn't stray too far from the iconic design, although it does offer a few new touches. The lid is made of carbon fiber and has a new Graphite Black finish, which is a bit smoother than the typical ThinkPad hp 640 g1 charger finish. It also uses a drop-down hinge design that allows the screen to be extended to a 180-degree tilt range. As always, ThinkPad and Lenovo badges adorn the lid.
Beneath the lid is a 12.5-inch IPS touch-screen display that delivers vibrant colors, deep blacks, and wide viewing angles. However, its 1366-by-768 resolution pales in comparison to the 3,200-by-1,800 resolution you get with the Samsung Book 9 hp 65w hp probook 650 g1 ac adapter charger. That said, the touch screen worked flawlessly, and the display's uber-thin bezels made for easy Windows 8 swiping from either side.Rounding out the feature set are Wi-Fi and Bluetooth radios, a webcam and microphone array, and a 256GB solid-state drive with Windows 8 Pro. There are also a handful of Lenovo apps, including Lenovo Cloud Storage and Companion apps, trial versions of Microsoft Office and Norton Studio, Skype, and Evernote Touch.
Display
The 12.5-inch, 1366 x 768-pixel IPS touch display on the X240 delivers bright colors and wide viewing angles. When we watched a trailer for "The Avengers," the orange in some explosions and the red in Thor's cape really popped off the screen and did not fade, even at 180 degrees to either side. Unfortunately, the relatively low resolution made fine details (like the stubble on Robert Downey Jr.'s face) harder to make out than on the 1080p ThinkPad T440s cinema hd display 90w power adapter we tested. Gradients, such as the silver in the Avengers logo, appeared grainy. Lenovo will be offering a 1080p screen option on the X240 in the near future. The X240 has a number of I/O ports you won’t find on the 2013 X1 Carbon, including a gigabit ethernet port, a smart card reader, 34mm Express card socket, a VGA port, an always-on USB 2.0 port, and a docking port on its bottom. Like the X1 Carbon netzteil asus ep121, it also has two USB 3.0 ports, a mini DisplayPort, an SD card reader, and a fingerprint reader (an included option our eval unit).
Because of the increased resolution from 1366x768 to 1920x1080 pixels (with the same diagonal size of 12.5 inches), the pixel density makes a big jump as well. Instead of 125, the display now has an impressive 176 ppi, which results in a very sharp presentation even with small viewing distances. The space on the desktop is increased at the same time: Even some multitasking is possible if you waive an adjustment of the scaling option to increase the size of symbols and fonts.
Unfortunately, we cannot confirm hopes that the expensive Full HD panel would offer a better performance in terms of color reproduction. Considering the highly dissatisfying coverage of the sRGB (57 percent) as well as AdobeRGB asus ux31a ladekabel standard (41 percent), the subnotebook is hardly suited for professional picture or graphics applications. Additionally, you will have to live with significant deviations in terms of colors (DeltaE 6.9) and grayscale (DeltaE 6.5). A calibration could not completely solve the problems; blue colors in particular clearly miss their reference values, even with the optimal settings for the display (DeltaE sometime over 15).
Keyboard
With the ThinkPad X240 keyboard, Lenovo has taken two big steps forward, but also one small step back from its prior X200 series laptops. The palm rest, which left our wrists hanging over the lip on last year's X230, has been lengthened enough to support an adult hand, which is absolutely critical for typing comfortably and avoiding shoulder strain. The island-style keys are wide and large, and have a slightly concave shape that helps touch-typists feel the boundaries between them. As with other ThinkPads, the keyboard is spill-resistant and has a two-setting backlight that appeared dimmer than the keyboard on the T440s lenovo ideapad yoga 13 netzteil but was more than bright enough to make out all the keys in both low and high modes.
I was also a little disappointed in the X240’s backlit, island-style keyboard. I've used a number of Lenovo keyboards, and this one just doesn't feel as nice (for lack of a better term). The spacebar has an oddly stiff feel that made me miss-tap it frequently, and the key spacing didn't feel as comfortable. It's not a terrible keyboard, but it's not as outstanding as I've come to expect from a ThinkPad.
However, the keyboard also has a bit less vertical travel than last year's X230 and some other current ThinkPads. Though the key feel is still better than you'll find on 95 percent of laptops, the X240 just isn't as responsive as the ThinkPad T440s, or even the Dell Latitude 7740 ac adapter tiny m92, which has more travel despite its thinner profile. We were able to achieve our typical rate of 86 words per minute on the Ten Thumbs Typing Tutor test, but with a higher-than-normal 2 percent error rate. In comparison, we achieved a much stronger 92 words per minute with a 1 percent error rate on the ThinkPad T440s.
Performance
With its 1.6-GHz Core i5-4200U CPU, 8GB of RAM and 256GB SSD, our configuration of the Lenovo ThinkPad X240 offers performance that's good enough for even the most demanding productivity tasks and some light gaming. On PCMark7, a synthetic benchmark that measures overall performance, the X240 acer iconia a700 netzteil scored a solid 4,040 -- slightly above the 3,877 ultraportable-laptop category average, but a bit behind the 1.9-GHz Core i5-4300U-powered Dell Latitude E7240. The ThinkPad X240 is also available with the Core i5-4300U for $100 more than the 4200U.
The X240 handled our multimedia tests with aplomb, finishing the Photoshop workload in 5 minute 54 seconds and the Handbrake video encoding test in 1:25. These scores are pretty much on par with the Samsung Book 9 Plus (5:51 and 1:23, respectively), which uses the same Core i5 processor. The Intel Graphics HD 4400 chip performed as expected; the X240's ad 3014stn 3DMark 11scores of 1,445 (Entry) and 209 (Extreme) were a bit higher than those of the Sony VAIO Pro 13 scores (1297 and 208, respectively) but slightly lower than the Dell Latitude e7240 Touch (1,600 and 259, respectively). You won't get playable frames rates from this GPU either, but the X240 is not designed for game-play.
The X240's 256GB SSD allowed it to boot Windows 8 Pro in a speedy 13 seconds -- quite a bit faster than the 20-second category average and a little faster than the Dell Latitude E7240 (17 seconds). The drive took just 36 seconds to complete the LAPTOP File Transfer test, which involves copying 4.97GB of mixed media files. That's a transfer rate of 141.4 MBps, which is well above the 104.9-MBps category average but a bit short of the Dell Latitude E7240's sony ac adapter 19.5 v vgp ac19v37 164.2 MBps rate and the 242.4 MBps offered by the MacBook Air 13-inch.
Whether you're a long-time ThinkPad enthusiast or a newbie, the X240 is an excellent example of why the brand has been so successful for so many years. Solid performance and a durable design make this ultrabook an ideal travel companion, and its incredible 15-plus hour battery life is hard to beat. A higher resolution screen would be nice, but considering this is a business-class laptop that's not really a deal breaker and doesn't prevent the X240 from becoming our newest Editors' Choice for business ultrabooks.
Battery
Using the capacity of two 3-cell batteries (one of which is removable) the X240 motion le1700 akku held its own on our battery rundown test, lasting almost six hours (5 hours 54 seconds). The Dell 6430u (HD+) lasted 5:10 and the Dell e7240 Touch lasted 7:21. However, replacing the 3-cell battery with the slightly bulkier 6-cell battery resulted in a record-setting battery life of 15:16, the equivalent of two full work days.
The x240 packs a fourth-generation Intel Core processor, so you can expect strong battery life. Our eval unit came with a Core i5-4200U, but you can make other choices when you place your order. The three-cell battery in this one ran for 6 hours and 26 minutes, which is typical of Haswell-powered notebooks toshiba satellite z830 battery replacement, but Lenovo also offers an optional six-cell battery that should run much longer than the average workday. That large battery will add weight and about a half-inch of thickness to the X240-it will protrude from the bottom rear of the laptop.

If you're willing to deal with a little extra bulk, the ThinkPad X240's hp pavilion 27xi power supply 6-cell battery will give you the longest endurance of any laptop on the market. With its 6-cell extended battery on board, the X240 lasted an impressive 20 hours and 28 minutes on the LAPTOP Battery Test, which involves continuous Web surfing over Wi-Fi at 40 percent brightness. That's the longest time we've ever seen on a laptop without a battery slice attached and only 18 minutes behind last year's ThinkPad X230 with its bulky battery slice, our all-time battery-life leader.
