Acer has been diligently releasing, improving, and iterating its Android tablets for a year now. The Iconia Tab A700 is its fifth major crack at tablets and its diligence is visible in almost every detail of the design. This time, to better compete with the new iPad, Acer has added a Full HD display and bumped up the processing power, yet again.
Design
Acer has tried to make the rear of the tablet feel good on the digits, though. As a lower-cost tablet among its peers, most notably the Asus Transformer Pad Infinity, its use of plastic rather than metal throughout comes as no surprise, but the back has been rubberised to avoid the cheap impression of some kinds of plastic.Asus used the same technique when it made the Google Nexus 7 dell akku m6500, and while the effect seems less impressive here in a much more expensive tablet, it still works. Again, though, the dotted texture to the rear works in tandem with the workmanlike sides and the unavoidable "PC" connotations of the Acer logo to make the Iconia A700 rank among the less desirable big-name Android tablets.
Specific to the Acer Iconia A700, the tablet has a more studious, slightly less stylish look than some of its peers. It's down to the lines. The ends of the tablet are fairly angular plates of silvery plastic, where most tablet-makers opt for a more smooth-edged design. It doesn't ruin the ergonomics of the tablet, but leaves it with a less finger-friendly feel. The A700's apple cinema hd display netzteil left and right edges are adorned with silver plating; the back feels like a mixture of rubber and leather (in a good way), making the tablet easy to grip; the corners are well-rounded, and much like the Nexus 7 lenovo b5400 power supply, it just feels comfortable to hold. In fact, it's one of the most comfortable tablets I've ever had the pleasure of holding, with the leathery back (available in either silver or black) reducing the likelihood it'll accidentally slip from my hands.
The Iconia Tab A700 is physically identical to the lower-resolution Iconia Tab A510, from its dimensions (6.9 by 10.2 by .4 inches, 1.47 pounds) to its button and port placement. While that was fine for the thin (0.33 inches) and light (1.31 pounds) aluminum-clad Infinity Pad TF700, which was nearly identical to the Transformer Prime TF201 apple cinema hd display, the Iconia Tab A700 remains as clunky and uninspiring as its plastic predecessor, the A510. At least the rubberized back is comfortable to hold.
Display
The main attraction, of course, is the 1,920 x 1,200, LED-backlit display with a pixel density of 224 ppi, which puts most other Android tablets to shame. With the default background showing trees and grass in a rich shade of green, the A700's level of detail is outstanding. We'll steer clear of naming that other tablet with a 2,048 x 1,536 screen, but that and ASUS' Transformer Pad Infinity TF700 are about the only competitors we can think of when it comes to the Iconia Tab A700's stunning visuals. Speaking of which, we have to temper our praise for the A700's vgp bps24 display by noting that the similarly priced ($499) Infinity TF700 has an IPS panel, whereas the A700 has a standard LCD. And, unlike Acer's tablet, the TF700 is viewable in direct sunlight, thanks to a staggering brightness rating of 600 nits.
That same problem carries over to apps, where Android dominance still belongs to the smartphone market. Apps are written for smaller screens and, generally, look pretty bad on 10-inch screens, with a lot of wasted space and/or stretched-out elements. Text almost always looks better on the A700 than the A510 netzteil medion p2212t, but don't expect graphics to suddenly look much clearer. Android app developers have yet to take advantage of the high screen resolution. The App Store over at Apple offers more than 200,000 apps written specifically for the iPad, many of which are written with the Retina display in mind. The Google Play store, on the other hand, has a small section for recommended tablet apps, and even some of those are made for smartphone screens. There are also alternative app portals, like the Tablified Market ($1.49, 4 stars) or Nvidia's Tegra Zone, that offer well curated, but relatively sparse, selections of tablet apps.
The A700 runs Android 4.0.4 (Ice Cream Sandwich) with Acer's Ring UI, which is a generally light skin, but further from stock Android than you'll find on Asus tablets. A virtual button at the bottom of the screen brings up the Acer c22 ux31 battery Ring, which presents you with five customizable quick app shortcuts, Web bookmarks, and volume controls. The lock screen also features a ring of four customizable quick app shortcuts. You'll also find Acer Print, which lets you connect to Wi-Fi enabled printers, and the clear.fi DLNA media server for wirelessly pushing media to capable devices like HDTVs. Rounding out some of the more useful apps are Aupeo, an Internet radio app, McAfee Antivirus, and Polaris Office for Microsoft Office documents, spreadsheets, and presentations.
With outdoor use, we have to complain about absolutely everything. Not only does the display provide a poor amount of brightness, but the glass screen reflects light in a way that makes it hard to recognize anything - even in the shade. This severely narrows the potential uses of the tablet netzteil acer iconia a700, especially outdoor use. Even lamps or other light sources are capable of creating annoying reflections. Sometime very soon, 1080p will be the new minimum for a tablet's display resolution - much like the new iPad, the next round of updates for many manufacturers will likely include a screen like the A700's. Whether you use your Android tablet to read, game, watch movies, or just browse the web and check your email, that's something to be happy about.
Software
The A700 comes preinstalled with Android 4.0.4 (Ice Cream Sandwich). Check out the Ice Cream Sandwich section of the Iconia Tab A200 review for detailed info on the improvements Android 4.0 makes over Honeycomb (Android 3.0). The A700 dell m3800 netzteil is the first tablet to ship with version 4.0.4 and while Google purportedly included improvements to screen rotation speed and smoothed out Web page zooming, I didn't notice any difference compared with other tablets running 4.0.3.As with other Acer tablets, the ring launcher sits on the system bar, providing shortcuts to apps such as the camera and browser. We especially like that the screenshot function can be set as a shortcut: it's much more efficient than holding down the volume rocker and power button. Acer's ring aside, this is very much an ICS tablet hp t610 power supply, and you won't feel too distant from the original build when flicking through menus or pressing the recent apps icon.
With the A700, Acer includes a number of custom software features that those familiar with previous Acer tablets should recognize. Chief among them is Acer Ring. Ring is an app shortcut and carousel-like bookmark hub that appears after you tap the green ring symbol at the bottom of the screen. Each bookmark or app that appears is completely customizable, allowing you to include up to four apps and seemingly as many bookmarks as you like.Acer adp 65gd b didn't exercise more restraint than usual with the software pre-load on this tablet. Booting the tablet up for the first time, you'll be greeted with Amazon MP3, Evernote, Netflix, YouTube and Zinio -- not to mention the full Google suite of apps and a bundle of productivity programs including Acer Print and Polaris Office -- in the app menu. Never fear, though: you can cut down on the bloat by disabling what you don't need under Settings.
In the center of the persistent bottom bar on the A700 acer aspire r13 netzteil lies a garish yellow circle that your eyes will constantly be drawn to as you use the tablet. I hate the icon, but love the functionality: when you tap it, it brings up the Acer Ring, a wheel overlay that lets you quickly search, access four customizable apps (by default it lets you open Gallery, Browser, or Settings, or take a screenshot) change the volume, or flip through your bookmarks. Once I customized the ring, it became a handy way to quickly add a note to Evernote, or switch back to my email without flipping through all the multitasking cards. If you don't want the ugly icon always in your face, you can easily turn it off in settings.
Cameras
If you guessed "pretty much exactly the same as every other tablet camera," you win. The 5-megapixel rear shooter is faster than most tablet cameras, but the results are the same noisy, grainy, soft photos I'm all too accustomed to. I'd wish for a sensor like the 41-megapixel shooter inside the Nokia 808 PureView, but no matter the prowess of the camera I can't imagine taking a lot of important pictures with a tablet. The A700's akku ux31a camera is fine for taking pictures of menus or wine labels and saving them to Evernote, or for taking the occasional shot to upload to Instagram, and that's really all I need it to be.
The 5-megapixel rear camera on the A700 is an improvement over the non-existent camera on the A200. Though it had some trouble picking up light in dim areas, the quality of photos in most standard conditions were good. Our outdoor shots appear to have a pink tinge to them, which we’re guessing the A700 picked up from the bricks, but it wasn’t bad enough that most people would notice. You can shoot 1080p, 720p, or VGA video with the A700 fsp045 rhc, and it's a different story with the same ending: soft, grainy, noisy, and generally not very good even in the best of situations. Given the size and weight of this (and any) tablet, it's hard to hold still while you shoot video, which means you're going to get some really shaky footage as well.
The front-facing, 720p camera (that's less than one megapixel) is good enough to work for video chat or checking your hair, but that's it. The lens is located about two inches off-center, which makes framing your face in the shot oddly difficult - though you'll get some unintentional rule-of-thirds framing with the lens where it is.
Performance
As we have already mentioned, Acer is sitting on the top of the heap with the Iconia A700 tablet ad820m0 asus when it comes to SoC and memory configuration. With the NVIDIA Tegra 3 and one GB of RAM, all tasks should be handled without trouble. Nevertheless, the relevant benchmarks of performance show that the high-resolution display is a burden on the tablet's performance. In other words, the tablet needs extra performance to deal with the display. The Acer will have to beat the relevant high-class competition in regards to performance. Considered alone, the performance is undoubtedly high. But in comparison the Acer seems to be under restraint. To show the loss of performance is due to the display, GLBench 2.5 revealed that in the off-screen test the Acer can easily keep up with the competition, performing very well. In contrast, the on-screen test showed that the native resolution forces the Acer to take a sharp fall backwards. Other graphic-intensive tests such as AnTuTu or NenaMark reinforced this idea. The Asus TF700T np3530ec battery, with identical performance, shows the exact same phenomenon. In this case the higher clock-speed of the Asus means that it fairs slightly better.
The Acer Iconia Tab A700 is the first Android tablet to sport an 1,920x1,200 resolution screen. The Transformer Infinity's screen has the same resolution, but that tablet doesn't go on sale until mid-July. The A700 acer g236hl power supply is available now. While the tablets share the same resolution, there is a disparity in the quality of each screen. The Infinity's screen has a higher brightness (even without IPS+ mode enabled), wider viewing angles, more accurate and vibrant color, and the contrast just feels more dramatic and "poppy."
Using the same quad-core 1.3GHz Tegra 3 processor found in the A510, the A700 matches its speedy performance. 3D graphics showed slower frame rates on the A700 than the A510 hp slate 10 charger, but that simply indicates that the high-resolution display is matching the Tegra 3's pixel-pushing power. Expect equally smooth gameplay from both tablets. Compared with the Asus Transformer Pad Infinity TF700, however, the A700 feels slightly more sluggish. Apps, especially more demanding ones like Shadowgun THD, took longer to load on the A700, and scrolling through websites was also choppier. We already mentioned how the A700 transformer book t100ta dk005h often required us to repeat taps before successfully launching apps, and we found the performance to be choppy in other ways, too. Apps like Skype crashed randomly on occasion, and every time we fired up Real Racing 2 the screen froze for at least five seconds before letting us start gaming. Still, many of tablets we've tested recently have been plagued by a little bugginess, and Acer's new slate isn't any worse in this regard.
Battery Life
The 1-megapixel front camera and 5-megapixel, non-LED-supported back camera don't perform beyond typical Android tablet cameras. Even with ample light, pics and video taken with the back camera produce grainy backgrounds and foreground assets look murky compared with the same assets shot with the Transformer Infinity's exceptional back camera. With much better cameras available on newer phones and the inherent douchebaggery of taking photos with your tablet asus transformer book t100 charger, I have to wonder: if you're not going to implement your camera on a tablet at least as well as Asus does, why do it at all?
The Iconia Tab A700's 36.25Wh battery lasted eight hours and 22 minutes on our battery rundown test, which involves running a standard-definition video on loop with the screen brightness at 50 percent and WiFi on. That falls significantly short of Acer's claim of 11 hours for video playback via WiFi (it also rates the A700 for 13 hours of video playback sans WiFi). It also falls about an hour short of the Infinity TF700 and the iPad 2012, two of the A700's original nexus 7 charger closest competitors when it comes to display quality. In short, though you won't be reaching for a charger come midday, that runtime is frankly pretty uninspiring.
The Iconia Tab A700 uses the same 9800mAh (36.36-watt) battery as the A510, which impressed us with its 9 hours, 34 minutes of continuous video playback. The A700 turned in a solid 8 hours in the same test (with Wi-Fi on and screen brightness set to max), while the TF700 lasted 7 hours, 17 minutes. What's interesting to see is that both the A700 and Infinity TF700 hp probook 470 g1 charger use the same batteries as their standard-definition predecessors, but still turn in relatively close battery numbers. The new iPad, on the other hand, needs a large 42.5-watt battery, and only lasted 5 hours, 33 minutes in the same test.App download speeds were identical to the Infinity, downloading a 218MB version of Deer Hunter Reloaded in 122 seconds. This score was averaged over three iterations with the closed network router about 5 feet away from the tablets.
Conclusion
Like the A510 and A200 before it, Acer has built another solid tablet, but only for those willing to sacrifice a bit on style, weight, and size. It runs Android 4.0 and has good processing power, but it’s heavier and bulkier than what we’re now seeing from most manufacturers and the interface feels a bit slow at times. It’s a solid tablet, but doesn’t stand out from the crowd. The $450 price point is cheaper than Asus and other manufacturers, but we don’t think it’s cheap enough to really help the A700 cinema hd display 90w power adapter compete against the iPad juggernaut, especially considering previous Iconia Tabs have been as cheap as $300. The Acer Iconia Tab A700 would serve you fine as a tablet, but be sure to weigh all of your options and needs.
At $450, the Acer Iconia Tab A700 is $50 less expensive than the same-size, same-screen-resolution Asus Transformer Pad Infinity TF700. Currently, the two tablets are the only high-resolution Android models available. The Infinity TF700 is thinner, lighter, and includes some higher-end components like a faster processor, and a higher-quality camera. There's a glaring problem with both of these tablets, however. There just aren't enough apps that take full advantage of their high-resolution displays. The entry-level new iPad is the same price as the Infinity TF700 lenovo m72e power supply, offers a much sharper screen, along with access to a broad selection of apps that were designed specifically for it. If you're sold on Android and can wait for more apps to take advantage of larger, higher-resolution screens, I'd recommend the Asus Transformer Pad Infinity TF700 over the Acer Iconia A700. Right now, though, the new iPad retains its status as the best large-screen tablet you can buy.
